Access to Information

Everyone has the right to request recorded information held by public sector organisations under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Along with this Act, two other pieces of legislation govern people's right to access information:

  • the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 give you the right to obtain information about the environment held by public authorities
  • the Data Protection Act 1998 protects your personal information and makes sure it isn't misused.  It gives you the right, in most cases, to access information that organisations hold about you

Before making a request

The Planning Inspectorate has created a publication scheme which commits us to making information proactively available.

This will also help you find information which is already available on our website.

Note: The Planning Inspectorate in England is considered part of the Department of Communities and Local Government and, in Wales, the Welsh Government.  For the purposes of the above legislation we have no separate legal identity and are not a public authority in our own right.  However, requests for information held by the Planning Inspectorate should be made directly to us.
