Biography

On 13 May 2010 Grant Shapps MP was appointed Minister of State at Communities and Local Government.

Grant was born and educated in Hertfordshire, attending Watford Grammar School.

After studying Business in Manchester he returned home to found his own printing company, aged 21, and it is a business that thrives to this day. Grant is well known as a hardworking, campaigning, constituency MP who has often led the fight on behalf of his Welwyn Hatfield constituents.

During 2008 he helped the modern day Conservative Party follow in the footsteps of Ian MacLeod - who founded homeless charity Crisis in 1967 - by joining David Cameron to launch the Conservative Homelessness Foundation at Crisis HQ in London. In Government he established the first cross-Ministerial Working Group on Homelessness.

On 9 June 2010 Grant was appointed to the Privy Council.

Grant Shapps is patron of the following local charities:

  • Isabel Hospice - enhancing the quality of life of patients living with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses in eastern Hertfordshire.
  • Mixed Group Charity - annual Christmas day meal for lonely and elderly residents in Welwyn Hatfield
  • Herts Action on Disability - delivering services for older and disabled people
  • The Larches Trust - creating opportunities for people with learning disabilities
  • National Maternity Support Foundation - improving maternity care in legacy of Jake Cantor
  • Mothers and Daughters - raising money for cancer research

He also founded Welwyn Hatfield BigSoc to help support projects for the local community. The groups recently supported a local clean-up in Welwyn Hatfield and are currently working on the repainting of the iconic 'White Bridge' which forms to the gateway to Welwyn Garden City.
