Summary

The latest National Statistics on fires, casualties, false alarms and non-fire incidents attended by the Fire and Rescue Services in England, produced by the Department for Communities and Local Government, were released on Friday 24 June 2011 under the auspices of the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics in this release are the latest available figures for England which are for the period April 2010 to March 2011. Key points of the data are:

Fatal and non-fatal casualties

  • Between April 2010 and March 2011 there were 321 fire fatalities; 15 (4 per cent) fewer than in 2009-10.
  • Accidental dwelling fires fatalities, which account for two thirds of all fire fatalities, were down by one from 213 in 2009-10 to 212 in 2010-11.
  • In 2010-11, the number of non-fatal casualties (excluding precautionary checks) from fires rose by 2 per cent to 7,400 from 7,300 in 2009-10.

Incidents

  • In England, Fire and Rescue Services attended 499,000 fire and false alarm incidents in 2010-11 - a 5 per cent decrease on 2009-10.
  • Total fires fell by 6 per cent to 227,000.
  • Dwelling fires fell by 5 per cent to 36,000, and fires in other buildings were down by 6 per cent to 21,000. Road vehicle fires fell by 16 per cent to 28,000.
  • Attendances at false alarms decreased by 5 per cent to 272,000. Within this, there was a 13 per cent fall (to 11,000) in malicious false alarms and a 5 per cent fall (to 185,000) in false alarms due to apparatus.
  • Fire and Rescue Services attended 134,000 non-fire incidents in 2010-11, down 6 per cent from 2009-10. The largest categories were as follows: road traffic collisions (22 per cent), water removal (12 per cent), lift release (12 per cent), and effecting entry (12 per cent).
