Summary
Communities and Local Government commissioned Faber Maunsell Ltd to carry out this study in November 2005. This study assess the suitability of current regulatory tests for evaluating the gas-tightness of chimneys and flues.
The aims of this desk-based study were threefold:
- to identify the existing test standards along with proposed (draft British and European) standards and to review the procedures contained in these for testing the performance and gas-tightness of flues
- to consult the key stakeholders in industry to identify their views on the usefulness of existing test methods and explore perceptions about possible flaws in the tests, ambiguity in the guidance or practical difficulties in implementing the tests
- to develop an outline programme for testing flues and chimneys in-situ to establish the robustness of the test methods recommended in Approved Document J (2002)
