Summary

Planning Policy Statement 7 (PPS7) sets out the Government's planning policies for rural areas, including country towns and villages and the wider, largely undeveloped countryside up to the fringes of larger urban areas.

This replaces Planning Policy Guidance 7: The Countryside - Environmental Quality and Economic and Social Development (PPG7) published in February 1997.

Note: The above publication was issued by our former department, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM). ODPM became Communities and Local Government (DCLG) on 5 May 2006 - all references in the text to ODPM now refer to Communities and Local Government.

Please note: The economic development sections of PPS7 have been replaced by Planning Policy Statement 4: Planning for Sustainable Economic Growth (PPS4) published on 29 December 2009.
