Summary

This BRE report was commissioned by Communities and Local Government for a project titled Tall Buildings - Performance of Passive Fire Protection in Extreme Loading Events - An Initial Scoping Study.

The overall aim of this project had been to develop an understanding of the performance of passive fire protection under extreme loading events in order to inform building regulations policy and, if necessary and/or appropriate, to formulate guidance for incorporation in Approved Document B, in support of the fire safety aspects of the Building Regulations.

Although this work is based on a short scoping study, the objectives have largely been achieved and some useful conclusions have been derived. It appears that the products and the systems and the essential test methodologies are available to enable building designers and fire safety engineers, if they so wish, to design buildings, and specify passive fire protection products and systems, which can provide a higher level of protection than that currently required by the Building Regulations.

The findings and recommendations in this report are those of the consultant authors and do not necessarily represent the views or proposed policies of the Department for Communities and Local Government.
