This module reviews some of the core tools that should be available to all Housing Options Teams. It builds on the generic approaches and good practice advice in the main Communities and Local Government Homelessness Prevention Tool Kit.
It is generally accepted that 16/17 year olds are best off at home - unless there are risks of abuse (not just sexual abuse) or violence in the family home.
Preventing and tackling youth homelessness is not something that can be achieved by housing authorities alone. The other modules and good practice tools in this website cover early interventions, accommodation models and services to meet the wider needs of young people at risk of homelessness, which need to be commissioned and delivered in partnership with others.
The tools covered here, however, are predominantly "in the gift" and under the direct control of housing options teams, and form an essential part of the range of activities needed to prevent youth homelessness.
Housing authorities can use the Communities and Local Government Self Assessment Toolkit and the Self Assessment Health Check for Youth Homelessness to review some of the prevention activities they should have in place.
